Lagu: Artists condemn National Theatre as Victoria University takes over son’s education

The decision of the Uganda National Cultural Center (National Theatre) to refuse space for a service to be held for deceased singer and actress Evelyn Lagu has been strongly condemned by Ugandan musicians.

Fina Mugerwa Masanyalaze, Queen Florence, the secretary general of the Uganda Musicians Association (UMA), and other musicians came out yesterday to criticize the National Theatre's management.

The deceased had requested that her body be taken to the national theater, but this request was ignored, it was disclosed at a vigil held at lagu's home in bujjuuko, wakiso.

One of Lagu's close friends, Bossa Sserunkuma, informed the mourners that Lagu had been quite clear about this request in her final days.

Later on Monday night, the mourners were informed that it would not be feasible to travel to the national theater and that the rest of the funeral services would be held at the residence.

However, the national theater yesterday asserted its own defense, claiming that the choice was not purposeful.

The National Theater was already scheduled for the entire day of Tuesday, according to Francis Peter Ojede, executive director of the UNCC, who explained why the request was turned down.

Ojede claimed that many musicians had made him angry phone calls and text messages, but he felt that he had little choice because his hands were tied.

He claimed he even suggested having a night vigil in the theater with the body present, but the family members declined.

Victoria University has officially announced that it has awarded Freddie Kasavu, the late Lagu's son, a full scholarship.

Kasavu is apparently expected at the university on Monday, September 25, to report for the paperwork to be cleared. This is according to university vice chancellor lawrance muganga.
